Dialogues en Situation — Anglais

1. Entretien d’embauche (Job Interview)§

Interviewer: Thanks for coming in. Could you start by telling me a bit about yourself?

Candidate: Of course. I have five years of experience in marketing, mostly in digital campaigns. I’m currently looking for a new challenge where I can take on more responsibility.

Interviewer: Great. What would you say is your biggest strength?

Candidate: I’d say my ability to work under pressure. In my last role, I often had to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.

Interviewer: And what about a weakness?

Candidate: I used to struggle with delegating, but I’ve been actively working on it. I’ve learned that trusting your team leads to better results.

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Candidate: I’d like to be in a senior management position, ideally within this company. I’m very motivated by the direction you’re heading.

Interviewer: Do you have any questions for us?

Candidate: Yes — could you tell me more about the team I’d be working with, and what does success look like in this role?

2. Chez le médecin (At the Doctor’s)§

Doctor: Good morning. What seems to be the problem?

Patient: I’ve had a really bad headache for the past three days, and I’ve also been feeling nauseous.

Doctor: I see. Have you had any fever?

Patient: Not that I know of. I checked this morning and it was normal.

Doctor: Any stress lately? Changes in sleep patterns?

Patient: Actually, yes. I’ve been working a lot of overtime recently.

Doctor: That could certainly be a factor. I’d like to take your blood pressure. [pauses] It’s slightly elevated. I’m going to prescribe some pain relief and I’d strongly recommend you take a few days off.

Patient: Is it anything serious?

Doctor: It doesn’t appear to be, but if the symptoms persist after a week, come back and we’ll run some tests. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep.

Patient: Thank you, doctor. Should I make a follow-up appointment?

Doctor: Yes, just in case. Book one for next Friday at the desk on your way out.

3. Au restaurant (At a Restaurant)§

Waiter: Good evening. Do you have a reservation?

Customer: Yes, under Johnson, for two at 7:30.

Waiter: Perfect, right this way. [seats them] Can I get you something to drink while you look at the menu?

Customer: I’ll have a sparkling water, please. And could we see the wine list as well?

Waiter: Of course. [returns] Are you ready to order?

Customer: I think so. I’ll have the mushroom risotto to start, and the sea bass for the main.

Waiter: Excellent choice. And how would you like the sea bass — with the seasonal vegetables or the mashed potato?

Customer: The vegetables, please. Oh, and could you let the kitchen know I’m allergic to shellfish?

Waiter: Absolutely, I’ll make a note of that. And for dessert, shall I come back with the menu later?

Customer: Yes please, that would be great.

4. Faire des plans entre amis (Making Plans)§

A: Hey, are you free this weekend?

B: Saturday’s a bit tricky — I’ve got stuff to do in the morning. What did you have in mind?

A: I was thinking we could check out that new exhibition at the Tate. A few of us are going Sunday afternoon.

B: Oh, that sounds fun! Who else is coming?

A: Tom and Priya, and maybe Lena if she’s not working.

B: Sunday works for me. What time?

A: We were thinking around 2? We could grab a coffee beforehand.

B: Perfect. Shall we meet at the museum or somewhere nearby?

A: There’s a nice café just round the corner — let’s say 1:30 there?

B: Done. I’ll drop Lena a message too.

5. Demander son chemin (Asking for Directions)§

Tourist: Excuse me, sorry to bother you. Do you know how to get to the British Museum from here?

Local: Sure! It’s about a 15-minute walk. Head straight down this road, then turn left at the traffic lights.

Tourist: Left at the traffic lights — got it.

Local: Then walk for about five minutes until you see a big church on your right. Take the next right after that.

Tourist: Okay, right after the church. And then?

Local: It’s pretty much straight ahead from there. You’ll see signs. You can’t really miss it.

Tourist: Brilliant, thank you so much. Is it worth taking the Tube instead?

Local: Honestly, the walk is nicer. But if you’re in a rush, Holborn is the closest station.

Tourist: Great, I’ll walk then. Thank you!

Local: No problem, enjoy your visit!

6. Au téléphone — appel professionnel (Phone Call)§

Receptionist: Good morning, Meridian Solutions. How can I help you?

Caller: Hello, I’d like to speak to Sarah Chen in the accounts department, please.

Receptionist: Certainly. Could I take your name?

Caller: Yes, it’s Marcus Dupont from CloudBase Ltd.

Receptionist: Thank you, Mr Dupont. I’ll just put you through. [pause] I’m afraid Ms Chen is in a meeting at the moment. Can I take a message?

Caller: Yes, please. Could you let her know that we’ve sent over the revised invoice she requested, and ask her to confirm receipt when she gets a chance?

Receptionist: Of course. Revised invoice, confirm receipt. Is there a good number for her to reach you on?

Caller: She has my direct line, but it’s 07700 900 482 if she needs it.

Receptionist: Perfect. I’ll make sure she gets the message. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Caller: No, that’s everything. Thanks very much.

Receptionist: Have a good day. Goodbye.

7. Shopping (At a Shop)§

Customer: Excuse me, do you have this jacket in a large?

Assistant: Let me check. [looks] We have it in large in navy, but the black is sold out at the moment.

Customer: Oh. Could you check if another branch has it in black?

Assistant: Sure, give me a moment. [checks system] Yes, the Oxford Street store has two left in your size. I can reserve one for you if you like.

Customer: That would be great, thank you. How long do they hold it?

Assistant: Usually 48 hours. You’d just need to give your name and a phone number.

Customer: Perfect. And would I be able to return it there if it doesn’t fit?

Assistant: Yes, as long as it’s within 28 days with the receipt. Are you a member of our loyalty scheme?

Customer: No, not yet. Is it worth signing up?

Assistant: Definitely — you get 10% off your first online order and points on everything you spend.
